Class – IV     Chapter 1 (Food Making in Plants)
Exercise : Answer the following questions
A.1 Why are green plants called producers?
Answer: The plants are called producers because they can prepare their own food.
A. 2 Define photosynthesis?
Answer Photosynthesis is a process by which green plants make their food
using water, carbon dioxide, sunlight and chlorophyll.
A.3 What are the materials required by a leaf to produce food?
Answer: Leaves need water, carbon dioxide, sunlight and chlorophyll to
produce food.
A.4 How do we use the food made by plants ?
Answer: Leaves make use of carbon dioxide, water, sunlight and chlorophyll to
prepare food for plants. The food prepared by green plants is glucose
(a kind of sugar). Oxygen is given out by leaves as a by product of the
reaction. The reaction that actually describes the process of photosynthesis
is as :
Carbon dioxide + Water ——> Glucose(food) + Oxygen
Oxygen this produced mixes with air and is used by us for breathing.
Oxygen is given out by leaves through stomata. During the process of
photosynthesis food is prepared in the form of sugar. Plants use this
food to produce energy, for the growth of plant, for the repair of
damaged parts of the plant and to conserve the food to be used by
animals and human beings.
A. 5 What is stomata? What is its use in a leaf ?
Answer: Stomata are tiny pores on the lower surface of a leaf. Stomata works as
windows. They take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen to the air.
Stomata also releases extra water from the plants.
B. Choose the correct word from the box and fill in the blanks :
1. Leaves are known as _____________ of a plant.

2. ___________ is used to test the presence of starch.

3. Leaves are green due to the presence of ____________.
